I was surprised to learn that the teabaggers are a very diverse group. There are people from all stripes in that camp. We see the more extreme in photos and in the "news" and presume that they are all of that ilk.
They are an incompatible marriage of people whose only common bond is anger. That can only really take you so far.
As far as what their impact is on elections, I doubt it will have any nationally. They will be marketed by their chief sponsor, faux news. They may get a candidate or two onto ballots in most ever state. And some of those candidates might actually be good potential politicians. But they're not going to take over the repug party.
More importantly, they're not going to effect Dems. The folks in control of the destiny of the Democratic Party over the next 4 years are the incumbents and candidates for 2010 elections. If they continue down their weak-kneed path, turnout will suffer and Rs may get their chance to prevent anything at all from getting done in DC. If they grow a spine, take principled stands, and get some meaningful legislation passed, then they will be in great shape.
