Beyond Krugman's "And that's just the way it is."

I won't argue over which action was worse.

But I am still waiting for Mr. Brant to grace us with his easy-as-pie solution to the problem.

My roughly outlined solution is to set up "News" as a reserved word. Reporters from "news" entities get unfettered access to politicians and officers at public corporations. Each reporter and each "public figure" have a minimum number of appointments that they have to agree to (to end the hand-picking of friendly reporters to get friendly press) with accredited reporters. Reporters and news organizations must then carry unimpeachable facts - no editorials. Errors require the corrected version of the story (not just the correction, the whole story) in every cycle, for a week (screwups will cost a ton of time and will address the burying of corrections in 4-point fonts). After a certain number of errors, fines can be levied and the reservation of "News" designation, including accreditation of reporters, can be pulled.

Not sure who should police it - grand jury sort of group, regular juries, or some other non-Federally controlled group. Electing them would allow too much abuse. Maybe a lottery selection like jury picking?

Anyway, the billy oreilly's can still spew their phlegm, but not on a channel or station that is considered "news". But no public figure has to agree to interviews with the billy's of the world - unless they want to.
